The Walimu Teachers Co-operative Union Limited has officially launched a teacher’s SACCO in Soroti, with the primary goal of enhancing teachers’ livelihoods and reducing financial stress caused by borrowing from multiple financial institutions.

John Michael Okiror, the Inspector of Schools in Soroti District, emphasized that the Walimu SACCO will enable teachers to access soft loans, promoting their socio-economic welfare. “I have shared and sensitized them on how to use this money,” Okiror said. “They should use the money for profitable ventures where they can make turnover. Otherwise, if they borrow the money for marriage, that one won’t help. We want to borrow this money and invest, then use the profit to solve our daily challenges.”

Florence Aloba, a teacher at Ojom Primary School, thanked the government for providing the revolving funds at an affordable interest rate. “Some teachers have been serving well, and this will motivate them,” she said.

The government has disbursed 500 million shillings in the first phase and plans to disburse an additional 500 million shillings to Walimu Teachers SACCOs across the country. Teachers can apply for the Walimu Teacher’s fund through a digital online system from their personal phones.

The Walimu Teachers SACCO provides soft loans, digital platform, revolving fund, and vocational training to support teachers’ livelihoods and the education sector.
