President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned the state-of-the-art Kiira Motors Corporation Electric Vehicle Plant in Jinja Industrial and Business Park.

This landmark facility, situated in Jinja, is Africa’s largest and most advanced electric vehicle production plant, symbolizing Uganda’s bold stride towards sustainable mobility and industrial innovation.

The realization of this dream began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 16, 2019, between Lt Gen James Mugira, Managing Director of National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), and CEO of Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC). With works commencing in April 2019, the partnership between NEC and KMC has blossomed into this extraordinary achievement, showcasing Uganda’s capabilities in green technology.

On his part, General (Rtd) Joram Mugume, Chairman of the NEC Board of Directors, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his strategic leadership and visionary guidance in Uganda’s development. He highlighted to the President that historically, large-scale projects of this nature have often been executed by foreign companies, resulting in the repatriation of their profits out of the country.

Gen Mugume conveyed profound appreciation to the President for placing trust and confidence in NEC/UPDF’s capabilities to undertake projects of such strategic importance and magnitude for Uganda.

He informed the President that, following his directive for NEC to leverage UPDF personnel, particularly the Engineers Brigade, to participate in national projects and bolster internal capacity for future infrastructure undertakings, NEC has established the necessary framework enabling UPDF Engineers to effectively operate.

Gen Mugume further noted that experience has demonstrated arrangements where government agencies engage other agencies directly for project execution – provided resources are available – tend to result in timely completion and relatively lower costs, as exemplified by the Kiira Motors project.

President Museveni congratulated National Enterprise Corporation, Makerere University, and Kiira Motors Corponation on their remarkable achievements, underscoring Uganda’s potential for success and innovation

The event was graced by prominent officials, including Minister of Finance Hon Matia Kasaija, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Hon Monica Musenero, Hon Nobert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Eng Paul Musasizi, Chief Executive Officer, Kiira Motors Corporation, and Eng Brian Buhanda, General Manager NEC Construction Works and Engineering Ltd representing Managing Director of NEC, Lt Gen James Mugira.

This milestone not only spotlights Uganda’s industrial prowess but also paves the way for sustainable transportation solutions in Africa, reflecting the nation’s commitment to green industrialization and technological advancement.

Furthermore, the demand for electric vehicles highlights our need for lithium, which we are blessed to have in substantial deposits in Ntungamo and other regions.

Congratulations to Makerere University, Kiira Motors, and the National Enterprise Corporation. Their achievements prove that success is possible, breaking down the barriers of doubt and demonstrating that we can indeed realize our potential.
