RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA -Uganda’s athletes are making waves at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, competing in various disciplines like Athletics, Boxing, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, and more.

The team, comprising 49 athletes, is led by Hon. Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Education and Sports(Sports), who encouraged them to embody diligence, commitment, patriotism, and discipline.

Some notable athletes include Jimmy Adriko (Boxing, 60kg), Angel Katushabe (Boxing, 51kg), and Joseph Francis Sebatindira, the 11-year-old Table Tennis World Champion. Uganda has a rich history at the Games, with 11 medals won in previous editions .

The Games, running from November 7-21, feature over 3,000 athletes from 57 countries. Uganda’s team is optimistic about their performance, with athletes adapting quickly to the Riyadh climate and training rigorously.

Hon. Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Education and Sports (Sports), has expressed optimism about Uganda’s performance at the Islamic Solidarity Games.

He encouraged athletes to embody diligence, commitment, patriotism, and discipline, emphasizing the importance of representing Uganda with pride.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon. Ogwang highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting sports development in Uganda, urging the Ministry of Finance to release funds allocated for sports activities in a timely manner.

He also emphasized the need for recognition and reward for outstanding athletes, citing the National Sports Act.

Hon. Ogwang is accompanied by the NCS General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel and MP’s Hon. Asuman Basalirwa and Hon. Juliet Suubi Kinyamatama.
