OBWAKOL, SERERE — On Friday morning, Obwakol Church of Uganda fell silent, then swelled with songs of gratitude as survivors of last week’s fatal road accident gathered for a moving thanksgiving service — a moment many in Serere described as a powerful “victory over death.”
The service, held on Thursday 14th November 2025, brought together families, church leaders, and area officials to celebrate the recovery of the victims who were injured while returning from a presidential campaign rally.

The accident occurred in Ocaapa in Serere district on Monday, November 3, 2025 and it involved a vehicle transporting supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. One person died and 18 others sustained injuries. Police have attributed the accident to over loading.

Rev. Joel Opus of Kyere Church of Uganda, who led the prayers, called the survivors “living sermons of God’s protection,” urging Christians to cultivate gratitude even through life’s storms.
“In whatever situation, we must give thanks to the Lord,” he said. “No one knows the day or hour of his death. These survivors are testimonies of God’s mercy.”

Minister of State for Fisheries and Serere District Woman MP, Hon. Hellen Adoa, attended the service and praised God for sparing the victims.
“I give God the glory for your lives,” she told the congregation. “In all circumstances, we must return to Him, for He is loving and merciful.”
Kyere Subcounty LC3 Chairman Joel Esadu and other district leaders also joined the service, standing with families in solidarity.
Today’s gathering became more than a prayer meeting — it was a district-wide expression of relief and resilience. In a week clouded by grief, Serere chose gratitude, turning pain into praise and tragedy into testimony.
“I give God the glory for your lives,” Hon Adoa told the congregation. “In all circumstances, we must return to Him, for He is loving and merciful.”
