The political atmosphere in the Amuria District continues to heat up as the security team, led by Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Paul Eseru, opens an inquiry into escalating acts of intimidation and violence against aspiring candidates.

During a radio talk show on Voice of Teso this morning, Eseru announced that an investigative file has been established to allow any assaulted candidate to formally report to his office. He emphasized that thorough investigations will follow each report, with suspects arrested and prosecuted should evidence confirm wrongdoing.

“We want every candidate and every supporter to know that our doors are open. No complaint will be ignored,” he said.

The rising tension stems from the increasingly competitive race in Orungo County between flagbearer Teddy Anyuk Osire and Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Jeje Odongo. The political environment has grown more volatile in recent months as several of Odongo’s supporters reportedly shifted allegiance to Anyuk, heightening pressure within the constituency.

On Monday night, several supporters of Team Teddy were arrested at Corner Kilak trading centre for wearing campaign T-shirts. The incident has intensified fear among Anyuk’s supporters, many of whom say they have been threatened, beaten, or forced to remove campaign attire by groups allegedly moving around with money and intimidation tactics.

Sources on the ground report that many residents have begun avoiding political gatherings altogether, fearing they may become targets of harassment. Some community leaders have also voiced concern that the current hostility could discourage voter turnout if not addressed promptly.

In response to the rising tension, a member of Anyuk’s camp who preferred anonymity said the intimidation is “slowly killing the spirit of democracy” in the area. He added, “People should be free to express their political choice without fear. This is not the first time intimidation is happening, but it is getting worse.”

RDC Eseru reaffirmed that the security apparatus remains committed to safeguarding justice and ensuring a fair campaign process for all candidates. He warned that his office would not tolerate political intimidation or violence as the district moves deeper into the election season.
