Residents of Omugenya Village in Gweri Parish, Soroti District, have received a major boost following the commissioning of a solar-powered water supply scheme expected to serve more than 3,000 people.
The project, implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment and constructed by Nexus Green, is aimed at improving access to clean and safe water while reducing the burden of long-distance water collection that residents have endured for years.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Soroti Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Yeko Bulubulu, said the project reflects effective collaboration between leadership and government.
“This development demonstrates what can be achieved when leaders actively engage government to address community needs,” he said, adding that it aligns with the broader development agenda under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Gweri County Member of Parliament-elect, Herbert Edmund Okworo Ariko, was credited for lobbying for the project and securing the land where the facility has been established. Leaders noted that his efforts played a key role in ensuring the project’s realization even before he officially assumes office in May 2026.
District officials emphasized the impact the new water source will have on public health and livelihoods.
Joseph Egonu, Senior Engineering Assistant from the Soroti District Water Office, said the scheme will help reduce cases of waterborne diseases and ease water stress in the area.
“Access to clean and safe water is critical for community health and development. This project will significantly improve living conditions for the people of Omugenya and surrounding areas,” he said.
On behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer, Principal Assistant Secretary Moses Esatu commended the area’s leadership for prioritizing community needs.
“Development comes to areas where leaders are proactive and committed to engaging relevant authorities,” he noted.
Local leaders also welcomed the project, describing it as timely and transformative.
Gweri Sub-county LCIII Chairperson-elect, Moses Ojaacor, said the water scheme is evidence of responsive leadership, while Omugenya Village LC I Chairperson, Valentine Ekaju, described it as a lifeline for the community.
Christine Apolot, the Woman Councilor-elect for Gweri Sub-county, highlighted the relief the project brings to women and children who previously bore the burden of fetching water from distant sources.
“This facility restores dignity and will greatly improve the daily lives of our people,” she said.
Other officials present at the event included Soroti District Internal Security Officer Henry Kotevo, District Communications Officer Abraham Ekwaru, outgoing LCIII Chairperson Simon Peter Opolot, and Gweri Sub-county Chief John Omagor.
The solar-powered system is expected to provide a reliable and sustainable water source for the area, marking a significant step in improving service delivery and community welfare in Gweri Sub-county.
