The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda has launched a publication profiling the historical buildings, sites, and monuments in Soroti City.
Fredrick Nsimbabi, Deputy Executive Director of the foundation, stated that the publication aims to safeguard these remnants of heritage and promote tourism attraction and development.
“Today we are in Soroti to unveil a publication that unveils the profiling the historical buildings, sites and monuments, this is a journey we started about two years ago with the support of Soroti City council, the Catholic Church, Anglican church, Muslim community and the schools”, Nsimbabi stated.
According to Nsimbabi, heritage property conservation in Teso stands at 50% due to insufficient preservation and under funding.
He revealed that the Cross Cultural Foundation has also done the profiling the historical buildings, sites and monuments in Kampala City, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara City and Mbale City.
He explained that development is cumulative and so Cities should add on history, add on heritage and utilize it for development through tourist attraction.
He challenged Soroti City Council to come up with relevant ordinances/ laws and funds to protect, promote and safeguard its existing heritage properties.
He also appealed the media to positively write about the heritage to appreciate its existence, tourist attraction and enhance development.
“The media are the gate keepers of information; they determine what goes out in the public domain, If the media does not project the heritage as something which is useful then the public will also not appreciate it”, Nsimbabi added.
Retired Bishop Charles Bernard Obaikol cited the home of the late Paul Eria Engulu as one of the homes with rich cultural heritage in Teso, urging schools to benchmark it for study tour purposes.
He added his voice to the call for the Iteso to preserve their heritage and cultural monuments.

Students from Soroti Municipal Secondary School, including Regina Adula, Favor Eleke, and Joshua Osaba, expressed their newfound knowledge about the city’s heritage.
The publication which covers historical buildings, sites and monuments, titled “Soroti City Through the Ages,” was launched at the home of the late Paul Eria Engulu in Soroti City.
