A section of the newly recruited teachers in Soroti District Local Government have today Tuesday 7th October 2025 stormed the district protesting over six months of delayed salaries, covering the period of April to September 2025.
The primary school Teachers were drawn from different primary schools in the district, totaling to about twenty (20) in number.
Emmanuel Otim, a teacher from Gweri Primary School expressed his deep-seated grievances over the prolonged delayed payments.
According to the teachers, the prolonged delay has pushed them to desperation, forcing them to beg within their communities just to meet basic family needs.
Betty Anyait and James Amuriat Okurut from Katine Primary School raised concerns of segregation on payment of salaries, and appealed to the district to pay them all their full salaries.
“Why are teachers recruited alongside us in other Districts getting paid while we are still struggling?” they questioned.
Moses Opama, a teacher of Amoroto Primary School asked the District to recruit a substantive District Human Resource Officer claiming that the current Human Resource Officer is allegedly holding three positions.
Martine Arikod, also raised concerns over discriminatory salary payments and the absence of induction programs, wondering why some teachers who were recruited with them in other Districts were being paid their salaries.
James Oede, the Soroti District Education Officer who escorted the affected teachers to the Human Resource Officer explained that his role was to receive and deploy the teachers but the Human Resources Department handles salaries and emoluments.
“My role is to receive and deploy the list of successful teachers; Human Resources handles the rest,” Oede clarified.
Simon Edoru, the LC5 Soroti District, regretted the delays, noting that they have started with the process of the payments hoping that the teachers will be paid all their salary arrears soon.
Meanwhile, Charles Oonyu, Soroti District Human Resource Officer declined to comment but referred the matter to Abraham Ekwaru, the District Communication Officer whose number was not available by press time.
