In Ngariam County, Katakwi District, the mornings have changed. Where once women gathered to lament about school fees and hard times, they now meet to count their blessings — and their savings. The clang of coins has replaced the sighs of despair. Even the wind in the cassava fields seems to whisper a new anthem: “Ogwang has lit the fire.”

It began quietly, like most revolutions do. One savings box here, a ledger book there — and then suddenly, 293 villages caught the spark. With Shs 3 million seed capital each, Hon. Peter Ogwang’s Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) initiative turned talk into transformation.

Now, the stories bloom like beans after rain. Acam Margaret, a mother of four from Pamba award in Katakwi Town Council, beams with pride:

“My husband used to control all the money, but with the VSLA, I can save and borrow on my own. I pay school fees, buy household needs, and even invest. Hon. Ogwang has given us women the power to stand tall,” Acam says.

Across the parish, Opio Denis, a young entrepreneur, wipes grease from his hands at his newly opened boda repair shop.

“Before, I feared the word loan,” he laughs. “Now, I call it hope. With our group’s savings, I bought tools and started this business. The VSLA changed everything.”

Behind it all stands Hon. Peter Ogwang, the Ngariam County Member of Parliament who is also the Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports) — steady, visionary, grounded. A leader who doesn’t throw promises into the wind, but plants ideas that grow roots in the soil.

“My people deserve better living standards,” Ogwang says. “VSLAs are not just financial groups; they are engines of dignity and progress. When people save together, they build together.”

The impact is evident. Women are paying school fees without begging, youth are starting enterprises, and families are planning futures. Even Patrick Todi, the Katakwi District Commercial Officer, nods in agreement:

“This initiative has improved access to finance for unbanked communities. It’s a game-changer for Ngariam County and its worth replicating it elsewhere.”

From seed schools to seed savings, from projects to purpose, Ngariam County is rising — not on slogans, but on self-reliance.
Hon. Peter Ogwang— where leadership meets legacy, and savings turn into freedom.
