Effective Communication, Key In Driving Tourism In Local Government And National Level

KAMPALA-The former Chairperson of Uganda Tourism Board ( UTB) Hon. Daudi Migereko has underscored the importance of effective communication in promoting the country’s Tourism potential.

Addressing Local Government Communication officers in a meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala on Friday, Hon. Daudi Migereko a Former Chairman Uganda Tourism Board ( UTB) emphasized the critical role communication plays in promoting local tourism in Uganda since they are grassroot level and are aware of the different tourism sites within their vicinity.

He tasked Communications Officers to be at the fore-front of marketing the tourism sites, enabling government tap revenue both locally and internationally.

He called upon both Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of ICT to fully equip the communication unit with the necessary tools and gadgets.

In response to the issues raised affecting communication Officers, Dr. Aminah Zawedde the PS Ministry of ICT acknowledged the challenges faced by COs and promised to provide Laptops for each of them. He called upon the PS MoLG to provide multi-purpose smart phones to support the Communication function.

She thanked Communication officers for patiently working under difficult conditions in promoting the Country’s development.

Ben Kumumanya the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government undesrcored the roles of communication Officers in promoting the Country’s socio-economic transformation agenda of Government, imploring them to utilise all forums to create awareness about government programmes.

He pledged commitment by the Ministry in addressing the challenges affecting communication officers.

Key amongst the challenges noted included; inadequate funds,non involvement of Communication Officers in Some activities,lack of laptops and cameras,lack of career growth, Delayed responses from NITA-U on website issues.

The Director media at Internal Security Organization Maj. Edmund Turyatunga commended communication officers for the strides made in promoting the image of government, specifically those who produce weekly magazines highlighting government progress with support from ISO.

He implored them to expose the corruption and other vices affecting service delivery in their communities.

Other key note speakers included;  Hon. Mulengani Bernard Kasangavu the former member of the East African Affairs, Mr. Charles Magumba Commissioner for Urban Administration MoICT, Hon. Dennis Galabuzi Ssozi, the National Coordinator PDM Secretariat amongst others.

The meeting ended with a commitment from all stakeholders in promoting the image of government through publicity of various government investments and ensuring that a favourable working environment is created for the communication Officers to enable them thrive in execution of their duties.
