Museveni Warns Local Governments On Corruption

Oditel Trading Center,Kapelebyong-President Yoweri Museveni has issued a stern warning to local governments over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds meant for road maintenance. Speaking to locals in Kapelebyong district, Museveni expressed his frustration with the state of roads in various parts of the country, particularly in the Teso sub-region.

Museveni revealed that his government had allocated Shs 1.3 billion to local governments for the maintenance of existing marram roads. However, he lamented that despite the funds being disbursed, the roads were not being properly maintained. Instead, he observed that the funds were being mismanaged, with some local officials seemingly more interested in lining their pockets than in serving the people.

The President specifically pointed out that the funds allocated were meant for routine maintenance, including clearing drainage systems to prevent waterlogging and damage to the roads. However, he noted that many roads were in deplorable condition, with stagnant water turning them into virtual swimming pools.

“I wonder whether these people maintain roads or they make swimming pools,” Museveni remarked. “I will take tougher action against such corrupt tendencies. I am going to deal with them.”

Despite the harsh words for local officials, Museveni took the opportunity to appeal to the people of Kapelebyong and Teso at large to vote for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the forthcoming elections. He urged them to continue supporting the government’s development programs, saying that the NRM had made significant strides in improving infrastructure and the economy.

Museveni’s warning to local governments is seen as a bid to crack down on corruption and ensure that funds allocated for development projects are properly utilized. The President’s message was clear: the government will no longer tolerate inefficiency and corruption, and those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
