SOROTI CITY – In a remarkable show of political maturity and reconciliation, veteran leader Capt Mike Mukula and NRM Eastern Vice Chairperson Calvin Echodu were spotted together in Soroti City during President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s visit to the Teso sub-region.

Once considered political rivals, the two leaders have now publicly embraced a spirit of unity, sending a strong message of collaboration to the people of Teso.

The atmosphere in Soroti City was electric as residents gathered to welcome the President, who was on a campaign and development tour.

Among the crowd, the sight of Mukula and Echodu standing side by side, exchanging warm greetings and laughter, captured the imagination of many and dominated social media discussions throughout the day.

The reunion comes on the heels of a significant political development earlier this year during the NRM delegates conference.

Capt Mike Mukula, who had held the position of Eastern Region Vice Chairperson on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) for decades, stepped down to make way for Calvin Echodu. The move, seen as unprecedented, marked the end of a long-held rivalry and set the stage for a new era of collaboration.

Political insiders say the decision was driven by a combination of party strategy and behind-the-scenes mediation, aimed at fostering unity in the Eastern region ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Political analysts say the unity between Mukula and Echodu is a positive signal for the NRM ahead of the next elections. It not only strengthens the party’s position in the region but also encourages a culture of dialogue and compromise among local leaders.

Residents expressed optimism, hailing the leaders’ gesture as a demonstration that old political differences can be overcome in favor of shared goals.

“Seeing them together gives us hope that our leaders can work for the people rather than for personal ambitions,” Julius Emau Emakanika told this publication.

As the day concluded, the image of Mukula and Echodu walking together alongside President Museveni became a symbolic highlight of the visit — a visual testament to reconciliation, unity, and renewed collaboration in Teso.
