SOROTI UNIVERSITY-Two second-year students from Soroti University’s Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Mr. Joseph Walusimbi and Mr. Joshua Benjamin Ssentongo, have developed an innovative smart energy metering system dubbed Smart KARA.

The duo showcased their invention at the Innovation Consortium Uganda competition, where they emerged as second runners-up, earning a certificate, a medal of excellence, and a cash prize of UGX 3.5 million to further advance their project.

Smart KARA is a prototype smart metering system that seeks to transform how consumers manage and access electricity.

The system enables automatic activation of power units once payment is made, removing the need to manually input the traditional 20-digit token code used in current prepayment systems.

In addition, the innovation allows users to move with their energy units when shifting premises, ensuring that purchased power is not tied to a specific meter.

This means tenants can retain and use their remaining electricity balance even when relocating to a new home or business premises.

The event which took place in Kampala Bugolobi, Tek juice- an innovation technology company on the1st November 2025.

The developers believe that Smart KARA will simplify energy management for both consumers and power distributors by improving efficiency, transparency, and convenience in energy transactions.

Soroti University congratulates Mr. Walusimbi and Mr. Ssentongo for this remarkable achievement and applauds their innovative spirit.

The University remains committed to nurturing creativity, research, and innovation, and continues to provide a platform for students to develop solutions that address real-world challenges.

“Soroti University is determined to ignite innovation and nurture the flames of creativity among its students.

Smart KARA is a testament to what young innovators can achieve when given the right support,” says Excellence Favour deputy dean School of Engineering and Technology, Soroti University.
