NYERO PARISH,NGARIAM SUBCOUNTY— Inspiring stories of transformation and grassroots wealth creation took centre stage in Nyero Parish, Ngariam Sub-county, as youth and women groups showcased tangible achievements before the Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang.
The groups detailed how seed funding and skills training supported by the minister have translated into sustainable livelihoods, underscoring the growing impact of community-driven economic empowerment in Ngariam County.
From Modest Funds To Growing Assets
Members of the Nyero Women Group narrated a journey of disciplined saving and smart investment. Using Shs 3 million, received from Hon Ogwang, the group purchased goats which have since multiplied, turning a small grant into a growing asset base.
“We are no longer just talking about poverty — we are fighting it practically,” said Alice Omalinga, Chairperson of the Nyero Women’s Group.
“The support you gave us has changed our lives. Our goats are multiplying and our confidence has grown.”

Similarly, Nyero Youth FC, a local football club, demonstrated that sports can also be a vehicle for economic progress.
According to team captain Emmanuel Teko, the club received Shs 500,000 from Hon Ogwang, invested it in goats, and is now reaping the benefits.

Skills Training Opening New Doors
Beyond livestock rearing, another youth group exhibited saucepan production skills, acquired through training financed under the minister’s empowerment initiatives. The group appealed for additional capital to scale up production and access wider markets.
Their display reflected a shift from subsistence to skills-based enterprise, a key pillar of the government’s youth empowerment agenda.

Voices From The Beneficiaries
Several beneficiaries used the occasion to publicly appreciate the minister’s support, citing visible improvements in household incomes and community morale.
Grace Imailuk praised the initiative, saying, “This support restored our hope. We now see a future where young people can stand on their own.”
Regina Akomolot noted that group-based funding has strengthened unity and accountability, adding, “When we work together, the money grows and so does trust among us.”
Robert Opolot described the intervention as timely, saying it helped many youths avoid idleness and dependency.
Mikairi Okiro emphasized that the projects have inspired other community members to form groups and embrace saving.
Minister Ogwang Applauds Collective Effort
Hon. Ogwang commended the groups for prudent use of resources and urged them to deepen a culture of saving and cooperation.
“This is exactly what I have been preaching,” the minister said. “We must fight poverty through organized groups, SACCOs, and disciplined investment. When people work together, development becomes unstoppable.”
A Model for Grassroots Transformation
The Nyero engagement highlighted the growing ripple effect of targeted empowerment initiatives among youth and women in Ngariam County, offering a practical model for poverty reduction driven by local initiative, accountability, and leadership support.
