AKOBOI CATHOLIC CHURCH,AKOBOI SUBCOUNTY – Ngariam County MP and Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has reaffirmed government commitment to free and compulsory education, warning schools against charging unauthorized fees that continue to lock many children out of classrooms.
Illegal Fees Blamed for School Dropouts
Addressing a campaign rally at Akoboi Catholic Church, Hon Ogwang said the practice of imposing extra charges on pupils is a key driver of school dropouts, as parents—especially in rural areas—are overwhelmed by costs they cannot afford. He emphasized that government policy is clear and must be followed without exception.
The minister noted that beginning next year and next term, no school should levy additional fees, explaining that government is already catering for major school needs, including infrastructure such as teachers’ accommodation.
Teachers’ Welfare Gets Major Boost
Ogwang also announced a 25 per cent salary increment for teachers, effective next financial year, describing it as a deliberate move to motivate educators and improve learning outcomes across the country.
He said government will continue enhancing teachers’ pay and working conditions until their remuneration is comparable to that of scientists, underscoring the central role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future.
The minister called on parents, school management committees and local leaders to work closely with education authorities to enforce government policy, noting that free education and a well-supported teaching workforce are critical to sustainable national development.
