The recently concluded LC5 elections in Teso sub-region have yielded a landslide victory for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). NRM flag bearers have dominated the seats, except for Kumi District, where an independent candidate emerged victorious. Katakwi District’s LC5 chairperson, Hon. Omolo Geoffrey, retained his seat in a tough race against an independent candidate.

The results show NRM winning 12 out of 13, seats, with candidates like Hon. Esudu Francis Obwonyo (Soroti City), Hon Bob Owiny(Soroti District), Hon Eng Ongurucho Martin (Serere), and Hon Omolo Geoffrey (Katakwi) among others securing victories. The only exception is Kumi District, which went to an independent candidate,Stephen Opolot.
NRM also swept Kapelebyong with Hon Jackie Ajego;the only lady in the race winning the seat,Pallisa District where Ben Okira won the seat,Ngora District where James Robert Otim popularly known as Aduk-moru easily won the seat and Okello Isaac Omiat won in Amuria Distrct.NRM also won Kalaki and Kaberamaido Distrct LCV seats respectively.
This dominance signals a stronghold for NRM in Teso, which has historically been a key region for the party. The opposition, especially FDC, has been facing challenges, with some members defecting to NRM. In fact, over 200 opposition members, mostly from FDC and National Unity Platform (NUP), recently joined NRM, citing a desire to be part of a party with a clear ideology and better opportunities.
FDC’s struggles are evident, with some analysts questioning the party’s future. The party has lost several MPs to NRM and NUP, and its influence in Teso has been waning.
The NRM’s strong performance in Teso can be attributed to its well-organized structure, access to state resources, and popularity among voters. However, the opposition’s poor showing may be a sign of internal conflicts and disorganization.
