Kyankwanzi— The Minister of State for Sports and Ngariam County MP, Hon Peter Ogwang, has urged National Resistance Movement (NRM) legislators to prioritize mass education and skilling as a central pillar for Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

Speaking during the ongoing NRM Parliamentary Caucus retreat at the Kyankwanzi National Leadership Institute, Ogwang presented a strong case for scaling up vocational training and entrepreneurship-focused education across the country.

Push for Practical Skills

Representing the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, Ogwang emphasized the need to shift focus from purely academic pathways to practical, skills-based training that directly addresses the needs of the job market.

He noted that government-led skilling initiatives have already registered measurable progress, equipping thousands of young people with employable and income-generating skills.

Tackling Unemployment and Poverty

Ogwang highlighted the program’s potential to confront persistent challenges such as youth unemployment, poverty, and widening inequality. He told legislators that expanding access to vocational education would unlock opportunities for self-employment and small enterprise growth.

“The future of our economy lies in empowering citizens with skills that are relevant, market-driven, and adaptable,” he stressed.

Aligning With NRM Manifesto

The retreat, convened under the banner of the National Resistance Movement, has brought together Members of Parliament, Central Executive Committee (CEC) members, and other senior party leaders.

Discussions are centered on aligning government programs with the NRM manifesto and strengthening implementation strategies to drive national development.

Strategic Focus on Transformation

Leaders at the Kyankwanzi meeting are also reviewing progress on key national priorities, with particular attention to education, industrialization, and wealth creation.

Ogwang’s presentation reinforced the party’s broader vision of building a skilled, productive population capable of sustaining Uganda’s long-term transformation agenda.
