The Minister of State for Education and Sports(|Sports), Hon. Peter Ogwang, has called for renewed unity and cooperation between the Iteso and Karamojong communities as a strategic move to end the long-standing issue of cattle rustling in Eastern Uganda.
Speaking during a regional engagement in Teso sub-region, Hon. Ogwang emphasized that peace and development can only thrive when communities work together across ethnic and historical divides. He noted that cattle rustling has not only led to loss of lives and property but has also hindered socio-economic progress in both regions.
“We must rise above past grievances and embrace dialogue, reconciliation, and joint development efforts. The Iteso and Karamojong are brothers and sisters. Together, we can end cattle rustling and build a peaceful future,” Hon. Ogwang stated.
The Minister’s remarks come at a time when security agencies and local leaders are intensifying efforts to curb livestock theft and promote community policing. He urged youth leaders, cultural institutions, and religious figures to play a proactive role in fostering unity and discouraging violence.
Hon. Ogwang also highlighted the role of sports and cultural exchange in bridging divides, pledging government support for inter-community tournaments and youth empowerment programs that promote peacebuilding.
Local leaders welcomed the Minister’s message, describing it as timely and necessary. They called for sustained government engagement, investment in border communities, and the revival of joint peace committees to monitor and resolve emerging tensions.
As Uganda continues to grapple with cattle rustling in Karamoja and neighboring districts, Hon. Ogwang’s call for unity signals a renewed push for grassroots-led solutions rooted in trust, cooperation, and shared prosperity.
